When living or holidaying in Zakynthos and Greece as a whole you will soon become aware of the many stray dogs and cats.  The Greeks do not believe in neutering their animals, consequently there are a lot of unwanted animals left abandoned.  There are however many people living here who are trying to make a difference.  Not only the English, Dutch, Germans and other nationalities but also the Greeks themselves who are trying to educate through presentations in schools.

ZAWF/ZOMZ are the official animal welfare organisation on the island but other smaller organisations are also trying to make a difference.  Many animals are being re-homed on the island but also in Holland and Germany.  Now the UK rabies laws have been relaxed, many are also finding their way to new homes there.  There are more and more very happy stories about holidaymakers have found there perfect pet on the island.
